Professional Certification

The CAPAPA Professional Certification Program sets the standard of excellence for the access and privacy profession in Canada.

CAPAPA Professional Certification is the first national professional certification program in Canada that:

  • Objectively evaluates and certifies information Access and Privacy Professionals based on skill, knowledge, experience and education
  • Is based upon National Competency Standards
  • Relies on a rigorous and unbiased qualification process founded upon demonstrable skill, experience, and education.

CAPAPA's Professional Certification is supported by Canada's Commissioners, Ombudsmen, and Review Officers.

CAPAPA Certification was developed with the guidance of the National Certification and Accreditation Advisory Board, and offers the most senior professional designation for access and privacy in Canada.

During the grandfathering period, applicants may claim their work experience towards the education requirement -- because even completing the few privacy and access courses available simply is not enough to acquire sufficient skill and competency to qualify for certification.

CAPAPA provides the only substantive and meaningful Professional Certification developed for Access and Privacy Professionals in Canada by Canadian Access and Privacy Professionals.

By setting and enforcing nationally-recognized and impartial standards for certification, CAPAPA's Professional Certification is a measure of an individual's "knowledge-in-use" - the application of knowledge and skills by those with real-life experience in this role.

CAPAPA promotes voluntary certification as the preferred alternative to government regulation.

"As a matter of urgency, the OIC reiterates its recommendation that the federal government set standards for recruiting access to information specialists and recognize them as professionals pursuant to a certification process."
